Openly Gay People Will Soon Be Allowed to Kill for Nationalism Like Everybody Else. Hooray.

This article is notable in that it gives a perspective on the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell which might be even more cynical than my own. While I’m not thrilled that soon more poor and marginalized youth will be able to join the military, the repeal of DADT doesn’t prevent better economic alternatives than military service from existing.

But it does go to a concern I have with mainstream gay-rights activism: it tends to view military service and legal marriage as solutions to, rather than sources of, oppression.
